Zwei Tage nach einem Mordanschlag auf ihn gibt der Reggae-Musiker Bob Marley 1976 in Kingston ein Gratis-Konzert, um seine vom Bürgerkrieg erschütterte Heimat Jamaika zumindest symbolisch zu versöhnen.
Danach emigriert er mit seiner Familie nach London, wo er endgültig zum internationalen Superstar aufsteigt.
Der biografische Spielfilm gibt sich viel Mühe, ein möglichst vielschichtiges Bild der Pop-Ikone zu zeichnen, in das auch historische Informationen und Grundzüge des Rastafarismus einfließen.
