Baroque ensemble meets museums and memorial
The square in front of Saarbrücken Palace is characterised by Friedrich Joachim Stengel's signature style. The surrounding buildings, such as the Old Town Hall and the Erbprinzenpalais, were designed to resemble the palace in style, but not to surpass it.Today, museums are grouped around the palace square – the Old Collection and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History and the Historical Museum next to the south wing of the palace. Not far away is the museum in the palace church, with its high-ranking works of sacred art.
The fountain designed by Gottfried Böhm is reminiscent of the guard that once flanked the entrance to the palace forecourt.
In front of the palace there is also the 'Square of the Invisible Memorial' as a symbol against antisemitism: the names of all the Jewish cemeteries in Germany are engraved on the underside of 2,146 cobblestones on the path to the palace.
