Built in 1923-24 in the style of creative historicism

The plans for the building were drawn up by Stuttgart architect Hans Herkommer.

There are allusions to Byzantine-Early Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance buildings in the exterior and interior design (coffered ceiling).

In the building, Herkommer combines the concept of a city crown by architect and urban planner Bruno Taut, which is based on 'crystalline expressionism' and has its origins in biblical texts, with the theological concept of a church dedicated to St Michael the Archangel.

The building, whose exterior is clad in rough, untreated sandstone, is designed to have a long-distance effect, but surprises visitors inside with a colour scheme that draws the eye to the choir on entering. There stands the high altar made of majolica in expressionist forms, which was realised by the Karlsruhe sculptor Emil Sutor based on a design by Herkommer.
