A memorial to commemorate Jewish victims of Nazi tyranny by name

This memorial commemorates the Jewish victims of the Nazi tyranny from the Saarland by name and aims to keep the memory of their deportation and murder alive for future generations.

The Saarland and the state capital of Saarbrücken, together with the Saar synagogue community, created this contemporary memorial and monument as a central place of remembrance for the entire Saarland on the square in front of the synagogue in Saarbrücken. The square was newly created in 2018 and is now known as "Platz der Erinnerung". The initiative for a named memorial on the square in front of the synagogue came from the then chairman of the Saar synagogue community, Richard Bermann.

The design by the artist group Mannstein + Vill Berlin emerged as the winner from the 98 proposals submitted in an open anonymous artists' competition in 2019.

The sculpture – a transparent, swaying wall with a total base area of 8x3 m – consists of a multi-curved, slightly inclined and walkable, unrolled 15m-long and 2.60-m-high stainless steel band, which is made up exclusively of the letters and numbers of the names and dates of birth as well as the dates and places of death of the victims.
