Experience the history of the Saarland
The museum presents the history of the Saarland in an exciting journey through time, from the Middle Ages through the Early Modern period to the eventful 20th century. In addition to changing exhibitions, the permanent exhibition of the museum consistently traces the fascinating history of the German-French border region since 1870, covering more than 1,500 square meters.
A special highlight is the location and history of the museum. Beneath the museum lies a gigantic fortress complex known as the "Underground Castle."
Hidden for centuries, visitors can now explore parts of the medieval castle, a shooting chamber (15th century), fortifications and casemates from the Renaissance period, a ballroom built in the castle moat from the 17th century, and a dungeon from the 18th century, all located 14 meters below the castle square.
